Magnaflow vs. Flowmaster

Hey guys. I'm brand new to the Camaro scene as of three months ago. Picked up a 1987 Camaro that was in pretty rough shape. The guy I bought it from didn't treat it too well. But I'm proudly bringing it back to life. Anyways...so I'm spending my tax return on a new exhaust setup. I went down to my local muffler shop and the guy quoted me $500 parts and labor. Is this fair? And that was for a flowmaster system. I'm debating flowmaster vs. magnaflow just because I want to know which one sounds the best? Which one performs the best? I'm looking for a deep throaty sound. And about how much will mpg improve with either setup? My engine is a 305 v8. Thanks!!

Welcome to the site!

If its just a cat back $500 seems quite steep especially for flowmaster, You wont find many flowmaster fans here. Magnaflows are less restrictive and less raspy at high RPM than flowmaster. Of all the modifications to my T/A ditching the flowmaster that was on it was one of the first things I did.
I don't know how much of a MPG difference you will really see because in the real world you will be enjoying the amazing sound your car will be making and thus have your foot in the skinny pedal more often.

So I called another muffler shop and they quoted me $395 for a cat-back Magnaflow setup with installation! That price sounds much more reasonable. You were right in the other shop being steep. Lol

Awesome! Thank you. That really helps me out. And i am excited to have everyone here to help with questions. i am just now learning about everything with my car so your advice and thoughts are definitely helping. So what do you think would be a decent price for a installed setup then? My exhaust currently is the 25 year old stock with a couple of leaks. It just feels a little sluggish with the throttle response. Someone at work said that with the current exhaust I have leaks actually help the exhaust exit better? I find this hard to believe, just because I know that the stock exhaust is pretty restrictive. Magnaflow will be what I will put on it then. Again thank you!

Welcome. Magnaflow should be your choice. A lot of us run magnaflow. It sounds awesome and it's made of stainless steel so you won't have to worry about rust and its very affordable compared to corsa/borla. You won't find any Blowmaster fans here. My car came with a Flowmaster catback and when the muffler fell apart from the inside(yea it was that bad of quality) I replaced it with magnaflow. Sounds soooo much better.

Edit: whoever told you the exhaust leaks were good, needs to jump in traffic. Lol

Hahaha. That's awesome. Alright. I'm set on Magnaflow then. I want it to sound amazing and be durable as well. About how much do you think it should it cost me for a new catback setup? And will a new exhaust help with my throttle response as well? I know that it will improve mpg, sound quality, and allow the engine to breathe better. Thanks!

Welcome to the site. I've run a flowmaster on mine for around 2 years and haven't had any problems. Sounds great to me and get compliments all the time the way it sounds. With that said, when the time comes I will probably be switching to magnaflow or borla since I like the fact they are stainless. You may want to check the cat and either replace it with a high flow one or depending what state you live in remove it all together if you don't have vehicle inspections. Mine has no cat and the sound and flow is much better. That could also contribute to the slow response you referred to if it is clogged. Also, make sure to ask the shop what size piping they are using for exhaust. Since you are redoing it anyway to fix all the leaks, I would recommend going with larger diameter than stock piping which will allow for future engine upgrades.

Very nice. Mine is an '87 so I don't have to go through emissions because it is 25 years old. Would an exhaust shop remove it if I asked knowing that I don't require emissions? And woul they just run a little more piping in place of the cat? Thanks!
Shop isn't supposed to remove them but there are ways... They could put pipe in place of cat or if you have any reason to think someone could inspect for it then just remove it yourself, gut it out and put back on so the cat housing is still there.

Wow that's pretty cheap. So they just came up with the piping themselves then?
Yes sir .. The shop did everything .. Took him a couple hrs but it was cheap it looks good and I got a custom 2.5" y pipe and full 3" exhaust .. What I did is buy a flow master 2.5-3" y transition for 35$ at summit racing and he fabed everything atound the y transition http://m.summitracing.com/search/product-line/flowmaster-scavenger-series-y-collectors

Price went up since I got mine they are now around 45$ .. I got the 2.5-3" ... I believe 2.25" y would fit better tho and would be easier for the exhaust shop ... Before I did all that I bought summit headers for 100$ .. Which headers will give u alot better soind quality and performance ... If I were u I wouldn't do a full exhaust system without headers !! If ur just looking for a quick and cheap sound upgrade and not looking for performance at the moment just get a quality muffler put on for now and when u get the extra cash get headers and the rest of the system added with the muffler u already have ... Make sure u get a 3" muffler and full 3" system for best performance gains

I think I saw that band play last year at Country Thunder USA.

Also, +1 for Magnaflow; I have been very happy with the sound and preformance of mine.

Magnaflow only sells through distibutors, so most places tend to have the same price on parts. Find a system on ebay that fits your car and google the part number, you'll see they sell for the same pretty much everywhere. A good retailer would be something Hawk's Third Gen.
